What's Parvo Virus?

Here are at KO Kennels we want to make sure we educate about the Rottweiler Breed. Did you know that Rottweilers are amongst the breeds at a higher risk of catching Parvo Virus?


The virus attacks the cells of the stomach attacking the small intestine specifically. The virus can be contracted by direct or indirect contact. Your puppy may contract the virus by exposure to a contaminated object (toy, water bowls and other un-sanitized items exposed to the virus). They may also contract the virus by smelling, eating or being around a contaminated dog. The virus is highly contractible and most often deadly. If you suspect your Puppy may be suffering Signs and Symptoms of the virus it is important to contact your Vet as quickly as possible.


Signs and Symptoms:

  • Diarrhea

  • Vomiting

  • Dehydration

Diagnosis

To diagnose your Puppy your vet might run diagnostic testing or an ELISA swab to search for the virus in the feces.


Treatment

Although their is no cure for the virus your Vet may treat your Puppy with IV fluids to assist with preventing dehydration until the virus runs its course.


Sanitizing

One of the best products to utilize for killing the virus is bleach.


How to Protect your Puppy

It is important to make sure your Puppy is fully vaccinated before socializing them. Make sure you take all of the necessary precautions until your Puppy is fully vaccinated. Such as avoiding walks, dog parks, pet stores and boarding.
